Beat

The beat is the fundamental underlying rhythm of a musical pattern. When you tap your foot along with music, that’s the beat. The speed of the beat is its tempo, measured in beats per minute (BPM).

Somewhat confusingly, looping rhythmic patterns played by drums and other instruments are also often referred to as beats, and sometimes the “beat” refers just the rhythm played by the drums.
